I Hate You!

More comments came in today from the waring parties, two College Pointers who no doubt shared my status in the Fifties and Sixties as bitches of the truly tough boys. I'm not sure where they ended up, but I hit "publish" so they're on here somewhere.

Again, boys, why can't we all just get along? We escaped CP and have had pretty good luck in life. Get over it.

Sideline: I again thought for a time that the comment was about me. Before I realized that they were part of the ongoing frenzy, my feelings were as follows: 1) if I generate positive and negative comments, I must be doing something right; 2) I have two sons, and yes, they know what a wimp I was in the old days; and 3) the nerve of some people who were very close to me in the pecking order now treatening me from afar. Connie Wolf can still have my money; you guys better have pistols if you want to take my measure. Even then, don't stand too close.

Fred: Bitches of the truly tough boys? JEEZ! I think that I know what you mean and if I'm thinking right, I didn't have that problem. I had one incident down at the Barrels (when I got thrown off what was left of the pier) and that was it! And the only reason why that went down is because I was about fourteen at the time and the BB Boys were in their later teens and they outnumbered myself and the two other kids that I was with. Typical bully shit. If I had the "bitch" problem, kids in my age group, back in The Point, would have picked on me. That never happened in spite of the fact that I hung out all over the town and I hung out with some pretty tough dudes as well as whimps and everyone else in between ....

You know what I mean, Rory. With no adults around, those guys always got their way.

Some of those guys were forces-of-nature. Pound for pound, L.D. was as tough as anybody in New York City, may his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace, amen. Probably Saint Peter's bodyguard by now.

And thanks for overlooking my bravado. I ain't looking for any trouble!

College Pointer #3 checking in. I found the comments Fred. It seems that Rory and Ed have this ongoing extreme dislike for one another. I don't get it either.

Lenny D. was in fact a tough guy, as you say. I think later in life, he mellowed a bit, and the tragedy with his brother Tony's kid scarred his soul till he died. RIP Lenny.

Hey-you may not have realized it at the time, but you had more going for you than any of those punkass "hitters" from the Point that I knew during the late 60s. I, of course was from Mitchell Gardens and so I guess I had a different status. As you well know, I was no violent person adn was never capable of defending myself physically (verbally yes), so I guess I was lucky. At that time there were only a very few really good folks from CP of our age as far as I was concerned. You know who they were too.

Hey, Nanute, thanks for checking in.

You know, I understand that Lenny, and a lot of those guys, had a reasonable side to them. Some of my friends on the peaceful side had normal relationships with Lenny. (Jerry Mykitschak, for instance, and Jerry doesn't have a violent bone in his body.)

I had an older cousin, Henry Ceely, who was as tough as they come in his day. But I believe he was only really hard on guys who thought that they were tough. If you were just one of the guys, he'd lay off. If you thought you were tough, he'd pick a fight and beat you half to death with a brick.

Tony I knew better, and he always knew how to get along with anybody. I don't know about the thing with his child, maybe you could clue me in? I always liked the guy, and he was worth his weight in gold in anybody's band.

Greetings, anonymous from Mitchell Gardens! If you recall, I met you at a Sodality dance at St. Fidelis, Freddy Maul had imported you for the occassion. That was the dance where Flippy, Larry and Jerry, maybe you too, took the stage for a couple of Rolling Stones covers. We spent some time outside drinking something-or-other, arguing about what was the Who's first single. There were also some good fights going on outside!

FRED: I didn't know that you knew Freddy Maul! But now that I think about it, he lived rather close to you (and nanute too) and is around your age. I lived next door to his cousins. My mom ran him over one day while she driving past his house on 6th avenue and he had a cast on his arm for awhile as a result. . . . JEEZ! NANUTE: JD may understand my sentiments regarding the horses ass. I simply don't like liars. I often feel like a caged animal and that someone on the outside of the cage is poking me with a stick. It is what it is and I don't believe that I started it nor am I the bad guy!

You have a sick deranged stalker, possibly a pedo, on your blog who goes by Cripps Mr. Fred. He should seek help immediately. God help any poor kids he has!

Fred,
You are absoultely right about Tony. True story: I'm coming out of Bernie's on 9th Ave. with a friend and a bunch of baseball cards that I just purchased. Several of the barrel boys are outside, and decided to take my cards. As this is all going on, around the corner comes Tony, and he grabs this guy by the neck and says leave this kid alone and give him back his stuff. I think I was about 12years old at the time, and didn't know Tony yet. But I never forgot his kind jesture for a helpless kid.

The story as it relates to Lenny and Tony's son is that Lenny had finally given up the booze. The College Point Yatch Club was having the annual clam bake, and Lenny took Tony's 10 year old for a boat ride, and ended up down by Hell Gate Bridge. The boat capsized in the strong currents, and Tony's son drowned. A real tradgey to say the least.

On another note: Glad to see you over at Rory's place. We could use some clear headed thoughts and observations on occasion.
Best,
Nanute

Jeez, Nanute, what a story. I remember lots of stories about guys taking little speedboats down to Hellgate, I think you needed to pass through it to get to the Manhattan part of the East River. Guys who still looked freaked out told me how the current swirled around the boat and sucked it down so that the gunwall was showing only a few inches of waterline. (that's my best nautical vocabulary).

Poor Tony, poor Lenny, poor kid. Horrible story, but thanks for the 411.

Rory,
Don't get me wrong. I understand your sentiments completely. I just think there comes a time when it's best to let things go. No sense in beating a dead horse.

DEAR ANONYMOUS OF APRIL 5th 2009: I've sought "help" on many occasions. However I was told that I was beyond "help"! HA! BTW: I've got a yellow (and quite official looking) ID tag that I attach to my person everyday while at work. What that tag signifies is that the FBI has checked me out, and on the basis of its "check-out", I'm not a "pedo". Do you have any special "pedo" knowledge that you'd like to share, here on Fred's blog, that the FBI is not aware of? If you do, then you need to state your full name, come clean, and share "your knowledge" with the rest of us. My question to you, ANONYMOUS, is this: Do you think that the FBI would allow you to wear a yellow ID tag? I didn't think so! After all, we all know what little buggers you and your "anonymous" brethren are! HA! Don't be afraid sugar! Come out of the anonymous shadows! Stand up proud and tall and reveal your web-site address for the non-anonymous world to see! I know that you've got a web-site out there, somewhere sugar, and many of us would just love to see what you've got on that site!

Freddie Maul was one of my best friends in the years before we both went into the Navy. I spent so much time roaring around at high speed in "his" car, usually drunk, that I am truly lucky to be alive.

Stumbled upon this site, enjoyed reading posts, recognized some names, brought back memories of my days "hanging" in CP ---
